For the uninitiated Google Places allows business owners to manage and update their business location information. This being a Google product, Google places it in high regard and so if you use this correctly you can get on the first page of Google for your local keyword search terms.

So you put in your business information into Google Places after signing up, and you can update it whenever you wish so that it appears correctly in Google maps and search, and Display Network sites. Also Google puts great store in all the relevant sections having information in them, so it is important to put photos in there and if possible a video would also help greatly. The photos and the videos need to be relevant to you and your business, so do not put any old photos up there, make sure they are connected either to the type of products or services you sell, or they are photos of your premises or people who work in your business.

Google loves it when there are links to be found, so if you have a website you will have this on your Google Places set up so people can click straight through to your site. If you do not at present have a website you could always set up a simple blog for free, and link that to Google Places.
